Leviathan
A downloadable game for Windows
*note: this game may require RPG Maker VX's RTP to run properly!
Leviathan is an experimental roguelite monster collecting game made with RPG Maker VX. It was made for RPG Maker Web's 2014 IGMC game jam.
There are four maps to progress through, with random minibosses separating each. In each map, there are multiple sets of routes to choose. Some will be blocked off by apparitions, but most contain items or new monsters to obtain.
The game is a bit difficult, so exploration and some grinding might be useful.
Back in 2014, the game was received poorly, so I only gave it one update which adjusted movement speeds and added minibosses.
The game was inspired by Pokemon Nuzlocke and watching let's players react to losing their monsters, so I decided to try making a game around that.
The game had a very sombre tone, and was supposed to be about how we cycle in an out of friendships during our lives, but always "remember" them in the end, which is why the game's finale allows you to revive a monster. I tried exploring that theme more recently in GIGABUSTER. The idea of a "dark cycle" is also why the "leviathan" boss was mashed with an ouroboros, and his design was also used for the Emperor's sword in Amber Throne.

I stumbled upon this game by chance at a Jam a while back and loved it. I love its atmosphere and tried to play all of the creator's games, and I really liked them, but this one is by far my favorite and inspired me to create my own game.
I played this when it came out at the Jam, and honestly, after the update, it became unplayable. Before, I could reach the end and get all the Mons rescued and alive, but since the update, it's very rare to make it out of the second scene alive because the random enemies are brutally unfair from that point on. I tried to get there with the best Mons and a very high level, but even so, the random enemies do a lot of damage and I don't survive more than a couple of random battles.
I would like to see a new update for this game that fixes that problem because I would like to see the new bosses and secrets in the latest version.
Hey, thank you for the comment! I can definitely look into the difficulty in an update in the future, or adding an older version to the downloads list. (edit: added the original 2014 version to the list)
it's dope to stumble on this again, really loved playing it back in 2014. definitely harder than i remembered it being, but the music and visuals are just as great as i remembered.
Thanks! I think the older version might be a slightly easier/different build, but it'll be added to the list, too.
